Postnasal drip
Adults of any age but older men are particularly susceptible. Patients with rhinitis or sinusitis often present with this symptom.
Allergy or infection of the nose or sinuses, imbalance of the normal nasal secretory mechanism, or reflux of stomach enzymes.
These include phlegm in the back of throat, a cough and the need to repeatedly clear your throat.
Fibreoptic endoscopic examination of the nose and throat can reveal the site of origin of the condition.
Non-operative treatment:
Oral medication and/or nasal sprays can usually treat the underlying cause.
Operative treatment:
If due to sinusitis, surgery to remove the source of the infection may be necessary.
